Frequently Asked Questions

LCD TV

Q: What is HDMI?
A: HDMI, which stands for "High-Definition Multimedia Interface", is the consumer electronic industry's first connection capable of transmitting uncompressed digital audio/video signals. Components featuring HDMI can transmit both digital audio and video over one convenient cable, replacing the tangled mess that resides behind many home theater components. HDMI also offers improved quality over traditional analog connections thanks to all-digital transmission. Digital sources like DVDs and HDTV programming can now be transferred digitally from source to display without analog conversions that can degrade the original signal.

Q: What is Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)?
A: Liquid-crystal display technology first appeared in the early 1970's. LCD is used in front projectors, rear-projection TVs, and flat-panel displays. Like a laptop computer screen, a flat panel direct view LCD consists of a panel of viscous liquid sandwiched in plastic. The liquid is driven by a network of transistors that control individual pixels. When a transistor delivers an electrical charge, the crystals 'untwist' to an exact degree to filter light generated by a lamp behind the screen.

BENEFITS. LCDs are far thinner, lighter and sleeker than CRTs, making them favorites of interior decorators. LCDs also need no convergence. They're immune from "burn-in," so there's never any harm from videogames left on too long, DVDs in pause or station logos on the corner of the screen. LCDs also need no magnetic shielding from your loudspeakers. And there are no altitude limits. So they're ideal from sea level to highest peak of the mountain.

Q: My Playstation 3 makes a bad crackling sound when playing games through HDMI connection.
A: Make sure the Audio Settings on the Playstation 3 is not set to Dolby Digital 5.1. On your PS3, Go to the Audio Settings, and select Manual Setup. Then uncheck the Dolby Digital 5.1 option.

Q: I would like to mount the LCD TV on the wall, which wall mount should I use?
A: Digital Research Technologies LCD TVs larger than 23" are VESA compatible. Our 32" TVs require VESA mounts that are VESA 400/200. This mount has 400mm x 200mm mounting hole patterns.

Q: How do I remove the stand from my LCD TV?
A: Remove the 6 screws from the back of the LCD television. Slide the base out from the bottom. View a Diagram.

Q: Does the DRT LCD TV work with universal remotes?
A: Yes, the DRT LCD TV's are compatible with virtually every universal remote control. Your T.V. uses standard Sony/Phillips remote code 003. If your remote requires a 4 digit code, please try: 0030 .If it is a 5 digit code, try 10030.  If neither of those work, contact your cable provider and ask them for the corresponding codes for Sony and Phillips televisions.

Q: What do you recommend to clean the LCD TV screen?
A: There are many new cleaning products on the market designed especially for LCD Displays. We recommend using a soft, lint free cloth and a cleaner that contains any of the following:

  • Water
  • Vinegar (mixed with water)
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Windex mixed with water

Do not use cleaners that contain any of the following agents:

  • Acetone
  • Ethyl Alcohol
  • Ethyl Acid
  • Ammonia
  • Methyl Chloride

Important:
Do not spray any liquids on the LCD screen directly. Always apply the solution to your cloth first, not directly to the parts you are cleaning. Always use a soft cotton cloth. Some materials, such as paper towels or old rags could cause scratches and damage the LCD screen.

Q: What should I set the refresh rate to when I attach my LCD TV to my computer?
A: When you attach your LCD TV to your computer, set the refresh rate to 60 Hz.

Q: What is the lifespan of the DRT LCD TV?
A: The lifespan of the LCD TV backlight runs about 50,000 - 60,000 hours depending on the model. The backlight won't burn out that easily, usually it's the high voltage power inverter for the backlight fails first. Both the backlight and the inverter are part of the LCD panel assembly which is covered by our warranty for the first year. But we do offer extended warranty for user who prefers a longer coverage.

Q: My picture is black and white, what should I do?
A: If the picture on your TV has no color and appears only in black and white, check to make sure there's no loose connection with video cables. To correct the problem, please try the following. Make sure you have connected the correct jacks on your TV to the correct jacks on your Video Source. For example, if you use the Component jacks (labeled Pb, Pr, and Y) to connect your TV and Video Source, make sure to connect the blue Pb jack on the Video Source to the blue Pb jack on the TV, the red Pr jack on the Source to the red Pr jack on the TV and so on. Make sure all the connecting cables are firmly and securely connected. Also, try to connect with new different cables. (Note: This vary depend on what video input source that you are using.) There might be a chance that your old cable is bad. If these suggestions do not resolve your problem, try setting the TV color to the factory settings by pressing Menu button and go to set-up for factory reset. If none of the above suggestions resolve your problem, you probably need to get your TV serviced. Please call Tech Support and have the model number and serial number of your TV on hand when you call.

Q: I am using a PC, but I get no image, what should I do?
A: DRT recommends connecting with computer monitor first to re-configure a resolution of 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz and then connect to the LCD TV afterward. Anything higher, the LCD TV will not recognize.

Q: Why do I still see black bars on my widescreen TV when viewing certain widescreen DVDs and HDTV broadcasts?
A: All of our LCD TVs except 20" have an aspect ratio of 16:9 (1.78:1), which is the aspect ratio of HDTV. However, movies are filmed at several different aspect ratios, including 2.35:1. Anything with a wider aspect ratio still requires the use of letterboxing ("black bars") to fit the entire image on screen. Some TVs and DVD players have a zoom function that allows you to blow up the image so it fills the screen, but the sides of the image must be cropped in order to do so.

Q: I have connected an external source to my television and I get no picture and or sound.
A: Check for the correct output mode on the external source and for the correct input connection on the television. Make sure you have made the correct selection for the input mode for the incoming source. Check for the correct settings in the Audio Select menu on your television.

Q: Do I need any additional equipment to watch HDTV broadcasts on my HDTV-compatible LCD TV?
A: In order to view over-the-air (OTA) HDTV broadcasts, you need to be within the reception area of a TV station broadcasting HDTV signals. Your DRT LCD TV comes with an ATSC tuner built-in and is able to receive HDTV broadcasts without requiring an HDTV tuner set-top box.

Q: How do I get sound when using the VGA input?
A: To get sound, you must use one of the two options. If from a set top box, you must use an RCA (R/L) jack to Stereo 3.5mm mini jack. If from a PC, you would simply use a Stereo 8mm mini jack (male end to male end). Both can be picked up at any local electronics store.

Q: How do I connect my home theatre to the TV?
A: You can connect your home theater to your TV using the digital SPDIF-Out (orange) connector on the back of the TV.

Q: My remote control does not work my television.
A: Please check to see that the television is still plugged in at the outlet. Make sure the switch is ON and front LED sensor light is on. If you have a television with a universal remote, be sure to select the TV mode on the remote. If the remote still does not work reset the remote by removing the batteries. Then press the power button down for 30 seconds. Replace the batteries and press TV and then power to turn on the television. If the problem still exists, check and change the batteries if needed. With a universal remote if you have reset or changed the batteries you will need to reprogram the remote for the other units.

Q: Why am I only receiving my local stations when I have cable?
A: You may need to run the Auto Scan again and make sure that Cable is highlighted instead of Air on Source in Setup Menu. You have to highlight CATV in order to receive cable channels.

Q: When I connect my laptop or pc computer to my LCD TV, I have no picture.
A: Make sure that the external display port on your laptop has been been enabled. Some video cards can support 2 LCD screens at once. However, make sure the 2nd LCD screen has been enabled under Video Settings. For laptop computers, you may have to enable video out through your Function keys.

Q: What is the recommended screen resolution and refresh rate when connecting my LCD TV to a personal computer or laptop?
A: We recommend the native resolution,1366 X 768 to be the maximum resolution with a refresh rate of 60 Hertz. For TV's that support 1080P, we recommend 1920 X 1080 to be the maximum resolution with a refresh rate of 60 Hertz.

Q: Can I connect a Cable box or Satellite receiver directly in to the coaxial input on my LCD TV?
A: Usually no. The coaxial input on the TV can only be used for over the air local High Definition broadcasts using an antenna. However certain cable providers will allow some digital and High Definition content to be seen through the coaxial input without a cable box.

A: I connected my DVD player my LCD TV through the component or HDMI input, but I have no picture or have a distorted image
A: Make sure that the DVD player is set to progressive scan or HDMI output mode. You may have to temporarily connect the DVD player to the LCD using the composite connection, change the input on the LCD TV to HDMI or Component, and then change the setting of the DVD player to a progressive scan (480P or above) or HDMI output mode through the DVD On Screen Display (OSD) menu settings. Please consult the user manual of your DVD player for more specific details.

Q: Do I need special drivers to connect my PC or Mac to display on my LCD TV?
A: Drivers are not required to display on the LCD TV. You may need a DVI-D or DVI-D-to-HDMI cable (available on our online store) or S-Video cable.

Q: I am having difficulty with the connection or operation of my LCD TV. What should I do next?
A: Most installation and set up questions can be easily answered from the quick start guide and user manual included with your new LCD TV. The quick start guides have easy to read diagrams and instructions for connecting your video (Cable, Satellite, DVD, and VCR) devices. They include remote control codes and instructions to use your existing cable or satellite remote with your new LCD. A technical support representative will be happy to assist you with any questions or concerns that you may have. Please have your User Manual, model number and serial number ready before contacting us with your question. The Technical Support Department is open Moday through Friday, 8AM to 5PM.

Q: My LCD TV has no audio or picture.
A: Power off the LCD TV and then disconnect the AC power cord from the back of the TV for at least 3 minutes. Then re-connect the AC power cord and turn on the TV.

Q: I have no image from my Cable box or Satellite receiver through the HDMI connection.
A: Make sure that the Cable box or Satellite receiver has been set to output through the HDMI connection. You may have to temporarily use the composite connection (AV1, AV2, or AV3) into the LCD and then change the output settings through the On Screen Display (OSD) menu of the cable or satellite box to HDMI. Please consult the user manual of your Cable box or Satellite receiver for more details.

Q: The TV did not come with an instruction booklet. How can I get one?
